Chief Tayac on Modern American Indian Issues
New! A follow-up web page is available for this event.
"The treatment of the Indians... reflects the rise and fall of our democratic faith."
In response to the gross violations of American Indian rights both in the past and present, Chief Billy Redwing Tayac has been working as an Indian activist for several decades. He has participated in many indigeonous struggles and continues to be a voice for Indian people everywhere.
By coming to Charlottesville to speak, AISU, the Native American Law Student Association (UVa Chapter), and the Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice hope that Chief Tayac will not only inspire the Charlottesville community with his words, but also provoke in the community the actions necessary to better the indigeonous situation in the United States and therefore the situation of our world as a whole.
Issues addressed
Chief Tayac will speak on the issues and politics that affect not only American Indians, but indegeonous peoples everywhere, such as the United Nations' newly-adopted Declaration of Rights of Indigeonous Peoples. The United States was one of only four countries to reject the declaration.
