AISU, the University of Virginia, and Their Stance on Federal Recognition

AISU, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and any other department or office at the University of Virginia do not require American or Canadian federal recognition in order to be recognized as an indigeonous person at the University of Virginia. Should a student wish to visit UVa and make an appointment with an admissions counselor, it is recommended and preferred by AISU and Admissions to provide documentation of Native lineage with a tribal enrollment card, a letter describing the Native roots of the prospective student, or other similar document to the Outreach Office in Admissions but is not required.

Note that fraudulently claiming Native heritage can result in criminal prosecution, Commonwealth-mandated fines, and/or permanent dismissal from the University under UVa Honor regulations or annulment and revocation of completed certificates and/or degrees from the University.
